How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile in 30 Minutes
If you only have 30 minutes to improve your online presence, spend it on your Google Business Profile. Nothing else has a bigger impact on local search visibility.
Minutes 1–5: Categories
Your primary category is the most important field on your profile. Choose the most specific option available:
- Good: “Plumber” (not “Home Services”)
- Better: “Emergency Plumber” if that’s your focus
Add 2–3 secondary categories for other services you offer. Check what top competitors use for guidance.
Minutes 5–10: Services
List every service you offer. Be specific: “Tankless water heater installation,” “Drain cleaning,” “Sewer line repair.” Add a brief description and price range for each. This directly influences which searches you appear for.
Minutes 10–15: Description and Attributes
Write a 750-character description that includes your trade, service area, and key differentiators. Fill out every attribute Google offers — minority-owned, veteran-owned, accepts credit cards, etc.
Minutes 15–20: Photos
Upload at least 10 photos: your logo, team photos, completed work, vehicles, before/after shots. Businesses with 100+ photos get 520% more calls than those with fewer than 10.
Minutes 20–25: Q&A
Seed your own Q&A section. Ask and answer 5–10 common questions: “Do you offer emergency service?” “What areas do you serve?” “Do you provide free estimates?” This content helps you rank for long-tail queries.
Minutes 25–30: First Post
Write a Google Business post about a recent job, a seasonal offer, or a tip. Posts show you’re active and can improve visibility. Aim to post weekly going forward.
Ongoing: Reviews
After your 30-minute setup, start requesting reviews from every customer. Send a direct link via text after each completed job. Volume and recency matter more than a perfect 5.0 rating.
