Google Map Pack: How to Get Your Business in the Top 3
When someone searches “HVAC repair near me” or “plumber in Atlanta,” Google shows a map with three businesses. Those three spots get roughly 75% of all local clicks. If you’re not in that pack, you’re fighting over scraps.
What Determines Map Pack Rankings
Google’s local algorithm weighs three main factors:
1. Relevance
How well does your business profile match what the person searched for? This is why your Google Business Profile categories, services, and description matter. If someone searches “tankless water heater install” and your profile lists that as a service, you’re more relevant.
2. Distance
How close is your business to the searcher? You can’t control this, but you can expand your visible service area by building location-specific content and citations.
3. Prominence
How well-known is your business? This is where reviews, citations, backlinks, and your website’s authority come in. A business with 200 Google reviews and listings on 50 directories will outrank one with 10 reviews and no citations.
The Map Pack Playbook
Step 1: Perfect Your Google Business Profile
- Fill out every field — categories, services, hours, attributes, description
- Choose the most specific primary category (“Plumber” beats “Home Services”)
- Add 2–3 secondary categories
- Upload 10+ photos (real job photos, not stock)
- Post weekly Google Business updates
Step 2: Build Review Volume and Velocity
- Ask for a review after every completed job
- Make it frictionless — text a direct link to your Google review form
- Respond to every review (positive and negative)
- Aim for 5–10 new reviews per month minimum
Step 3: Build Local Citations
Get listed on:
- Yelp, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack
- BBB, Chamber of Commerce
- Industry-specific directories (ACCA for HVAC, PHCC for plumbing)
- Local business directories
NAP consistency is critical — your name, address, and phone number must be identical everywhere.
Step 4: Optimize Your Website for Local
- Add LocalBusiness structured data
- Create service area pages for each city/neighborhood you serve
- Embed a Google Map on your contact page
- Include your city in title tags and H1s
How Long Does It Take?
Expect 4–8 weeks for initial improvements, 2–4 months for significant ranking changes. The businesses that consistently execute on all four steps above will see the map pack positions stabilize in their favor over time.
